Why is the file not working once I open it?
Make sure that you have extracted the zipped files to a location on your computer first. If you do not extract the files from the zipped file, your device may not let you mark those files as safe, preventing the core functionality from working correctly. Refer to the Setup Guide for assistance. In short, you cannot run Demand Genie directly from the zipped folder you downloaded. You must first extract those files to a location on your device before you can use them.

Will older versions of Demand Genie still work after newer updates?

Yes, each update to Demand Genie is released as a separate file, so outdated versions will continue to run if users have them saved locally to their device. Unfortunately, only the latest version of Demand Genie can be downloaded from this website. We always recommend using the most recently updated version of Demand Genie for the best user experience.

Does the information displayed in the Aggregate Data Summary output include participants who failed Stein (2015) criteria?

Yes, Demand Genie leaves data analytic decisions to the user, meaning it makes no assumptions about the validity of data regardless of data quality checks. We designed Demand Genie to include participants failing one or more Stein (2015) criteria in aggregated observed indices, but not in derived indices (participants with poor data quality may dramatically skew alpha and k values). Users who would like to remove participants for any reason, or "clean" their data, are encouraged to copy their output to a separate tab or Excel file, delete the participant rows of dropped participants, then re-paste their data into Demand Genie after ensuring there are no blank rows. Demand Genie will only analyze rows of data up until the first blank ID number, which is why we ask users to make sure they do not have blank rows after removing participants (ID numbers can remain out of order). Deleting any columns or rows in your Demand Genie file will result in a corrupted data file. Users that save a corrupted data file will need to redownload Demand Genie and may lose some or all of their previously completed work.

Why do I get a different Pmax than the Foster et al. (2020) tool?

Pmax observed refers to the price associated with maximum consumption and is calculated by multiply consumption by price at all prices in the purchase task and recording the price associated with the greatest resulting value. Demand Genie calculates Pmax differently than Foster et al. (2020) in a specific circumstance. Consider someone who reports consuming 2 alcoholic drinks at $0.50, 1 alcoholic drink at $1.00, and no consumption beyond $1.00. If we multiply price by consumption, notice we get the same value (e.g., $0.50 x 2 = $1.00 x 1). This makes it difficult to determine Pmax, considering it could be $0.50 or $1.00. Foster et al. (2020) will take the first instance of the highest value, which would make Pmax $0.50. In contrast, Demand Genie takes the last instance of the highest value, which would make Pmax $1.00. This decision was made since the last instance would represent the highest price associated with the highest total consumption.
